Title: Planet Verdora: The Green Hunger
Author: Nolan crestwood
Genre: Dream Horror / Sci-Fi Survival
Length: Short story
I don’t know how I reached that planet - maybe I never truly did. One moment I was lying in bed, half-asleep, hearing the hum of the ceiling fan… the next, I was standing on a strange world where everything pulsed with life.
The ground was soft - too soft - like wet skin under moss. When I moved, it squirmed beneath me. The air shimmered green, heavy with a scent of flowers and decay. All around, towering trees leaned close, their leaves whispering in strange tones.
At first, I thought I was dreaming. But dreams don’t feel warm, don’t breathe against your skin.
Then I heard it - the sound of chewing. Loud, wet, rhythmic.
From the forest edge, something moved - a plant with long arms, dragging what looked like an animal carcass. Only when it lifted its meal did I realize - it was a human body, covered in moss, eyes still open.
I ran. The forest came alive behind me - vines snapping like whips, branches shifting. I could feel the planet watching me. Every root and flower turned toward my heartbeat.
The air darkened suddenly. A rain of glowing spores began to fall, lighting everything in green fog. Wherever they touched, the ground opened - soft mouths forming in the soil, whispering in hundreds of voices:
“Stay… feed us… become one…”
I tripped over a root and fell face-first into a patch of glowing flowers. They shrieked when I touched them, closing up like fists. From inside, I heard muffled cries - like something trapped within their petals.
I crawled away, desperate for open space. Ahead, I saw a faint blue light - something different, mechanical maybe. I ran toward it, heart pounding.
A ship. Half-buried in vines, rusted but still humming faintly. Hope rushed through me. I clawed through the overgrowth, pulling away vines and leaves, my hands bleeding. The cockpit glass was shattered, and inside lay a skeleton - human, fused with the seat, roots growing through its ribs.
On the console, a single button flickered dimly: RECALL SEQUENCE.
I didn’t think. I slammed my hand down.
The ground roared. The vines around the ship jerked and writhed like snakes in pain. The trees screamed - a thousand shrill voices shaking the air. The sky began to twist, the golden clouds turning black.
Something massive rose from the forest - a colossal flower, its petals stretching wider than a house. At its center, an eye opened - green, glowing, and focused on me.
“You cannot leave,” it whispered. The voice wasn’t from outside - it was inside my head. “You are soil now. You are seed.”
The vines burst from the ground, wrapping around my arms and neck, pulling me backward. I screamed and grabbed a sharp piece of metal from the ship. I slashed wildly, cutting through the vines. Green blood sprayed everywhere, sizzling when it hit the air.
The button kept flashing - faster now.
The ship began to shake. A low hum filled the air. Light poured from beneath it, lifting dust and petals into a swirling storm.
I felt the vines tighten again, dragging me toward the earth. Faces appeared in the soil - hundreds of them, mouths open, eyes weeping sap.
“Stay…” they whispered. “You belong here now.”
I stabbed the ground with the metal shard, screaming. “I’m not your food!”
A flash of light erupted from the ship - bright, blinding, endless. The sound of the planet’s scream echoed through me, rattling my bones. Everything went white.
Then silence.
I was floating - weightless - through a glowing mist.
The whisper followed, softer now, almost gentle:
“Even if you wake… we grow in you.”
I gasped. My body jolted. I opened my eyes.
I was in my room again. Night had fallen. Everything was still. The ceiling fan hummed softly, just like before.
But when I sat up, the floor felt damp. My feet touched cold soil instead of tiles. A faint scent of sweet decay hung in the air.
And beside my bed… a small green sprout had broken through the floor.
Its tiny leaves turned toward me.
